A True Polar Adventure

Spitsbergen is the largest island in Norway’s Svalbard Archipelago. This is a wild place where no roads connect the sparsely populated towns. Instead, travelers explore the rugged coastlines and calm bays of Spitsbergen on kayaks and Zodiacs, and trek through the flower-dappled tundra and towering cliffs in snowshoes and hiking boots.

Realm of the Polar Bear

Spitsbergen is one of the best places on Earth to spot unique arctic wildlife, especially during the summer months. Polar bears prowl the vast tundra, a hundred species of birds swoop through the endless sky, and whales, seals, and walrus glide through the pristine arctic waters.

The world’s northernmost city is a unique community featuring art galleries, museums, a university and sports complex. The streets have no names, owning a cat is illegal and reindeer wander the town. Three thousand polar bears live in the region and a local gourmet restaurant has one of Europe’s largest wine cellars.

Anyone passionate about wildlife should put Spitsbergen and Svalbard at the top of their list of places to visit.

Day 1

Embarkation Day in Longyearbyen

Your adventure begins when you board your ship in Longyearbyen, the island’s largest settlement and the northernmost town in the world. As you embark, you’ll get great views of the mountainous landscape that serves as a backdrop to this seaside settlement.

Days 2 - 10

Exploring Spitsbergen

Explore western Spitsbergen as well as the stunning fjords and outlying islands to the north. From polar deserts to immense glaciers, the natural landscape here is just as varied as the wildlife. Each expedition presents new opportunities and the itineraries are customized daily, depending on weather and wildlife sightings.

Your Expedition Team selects destinations for the best chance of viewing the unique wildlife, history and geology of Spitsbergen. Polar bear sightings are common, with Phippsøya being one of their preferred hunting areas, since the towering cliffs of Alkefjellet provide many free bird egg meals for both them and the arctic fox.

Torellneset and Phippsøya are great places for walrus photography. Coming across a walrus haul-out is a moment you won’t forget, as these giants create quite the scene while each walrus vies for a choice spot of coastline.

There is no shortage of natural beauty in Spitsbergen. The tundra can be surprisingly colorful in summer, with wildflowers bursting for a taste of sunshine.

Day 11

Disembarkation Day in Longyearbyen

Your adventure ends as it began, in the frontier-style settlement of Longyearbyen. From here we’ll transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
